The Workers’ Economy Gathering is a meeting that brings together recuperated and self-managed enterprises, cooperatives and social and popular economy organizations, as well as trade unions and academics interested in and committed to self-management practices and the project of a new workers’ economy. The first gathering was organized in 2007 by Facultad Abierta, a program of the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina. At the moment it is integrated by a growing number of organizations and movements worldwide. The next Gathering will be held between the 30th of August and the 2nd of September in the Hotel Bauen in Buenos Aires and the Cooperativa Textiles Pigué, both recuperated and run by their workers.

Why a workers’ economy gathering?

Our contemporary capitalist order increasingly condemns the majority of the world’s working people to exploitation, precariousness, and unemployment, while unleashing wars, discrimination and destruction throughout the planet. In Argentina, where the sixth edition of the gathering of “The Workers’ Economy” will take place, one of the world’s most extensive experience of self-management and the recuperation of workplaces faces the offensive of this new stage of neoliberalism. This new International Gathering will be held in a particular moment when a workers’ economy based on self-management appears to be more and more needed as an alternative to savage capitalism. Amidst this reality the International Gathering intends to bring together and extend the numerous debates, discussions, and shared experiences of the three most recent Regional and earlier International meetings. At the same time it aims at broadening and strengthening the debate and organization.

  5. The workers’ economy and issues relating to gender
  6. Articulation and integration of the workers’ economy

How can I participate?

Participation is free, we do however you to register, in order to help us organize at our best. It is possible to propose a wide range of formats, among these oral presentations are admited for members of social or workers’ organizations, as well as audiovisual works, and book and magazeen presentations. It is also  to propose a paper presentation or a workshop, in this case it is necessary to register and submit a short proposal by the required deadlines. The main thematic streams are used as orientator of the discussion, and were decided on by taking into account the work we have done in previous international and regional gatherings. The thematic streams are deliberately broad in order to organize the program, based on the presentation proposals, papers and workshop proposals received by who shall actually be participating. We use this strategy as a way to plan for the fullest and most inclusive program. Please also check the session for contributions, as the one of the previous gatherings to get a general idea around current debates and participants.aaa
